The tamper diameter has to match the basket exactly: two tenths of play leave a ring where water goes first.
The tamper supplied with machines is almost always plastic and undersized. The most affordable model in the aisle already does better.
Far less than people think, and above all consistently. The vertical alignment of the stroke matters far more than the force: a tilted tamp creates a preferential channel.
The basket's, to a tenth of a millimetre. A 58 mm tamper in a 58.5 basket leaves a ring of uncompacted grounds through which the water goes first.
No, but it removes one source of unevenness. On a grinder that produces clumps it does more for consistency than any tamper.
Breaking up clumps of grounds before tamping. On light, finely ground coffees it prevents the channels that ruin extraction.
It is inadvisable after tamping: the knock can crack the puck and create exactly the channel you were trying to avoid.
The handle has no effect on extraction; only the base matters. Wood is a question of feel in the hand and of looks.
The tamper's exact diameter is what counts, ahead of pressure and well ahead of material. A distributor adds consistency if your grinder produces clumps — otherwise a good tamper of the right diameter is enough.
