Puck screens are marketed on extraction and earn their place on housekeeping, so it is worth separating the two.
On extraction, the effect is small. When the pump starts, water arrives through the shower screen and hits the puck hardest directly beneath the outlets. A screen spreads that first contact across the surface rather than letting it drill. Whether that shows up in the cup is genuinely disputed, and anyone telling you it transforms a shot is selling one.
On cleanliness, the effect is obvious within a week. Without a screen, coffee migrates upward into the shower screen on every shot, and the group needs wiping after each session and dismantling every month. With one, the screen stays visibly clear and the wiping largely stops.
That is a real, daily, non-trivial benefit for twenty-odd euros, and it is how the product should be sold.
What it does not do is fix channelling. Channelling is caused by density variations inside the bed, and a disc sitting on top cannot reach them. If your shots spray sideways on a bottomless portafilter, buy a WDT tool first and this second.

Slightly, and the evidence is mixed. It spreads the arriving water rather than letting it drill into one point, which helps a little at the very start of the shot. Anyone claiming it transforms a shot is overselling it.
Cleanliness, mostly. It keeps coffee off the shower screen, so the group needs far less wiping and the screen stays clear for longer between deep cleans. That is a real daily benefit even if the cup barely changes.
