The best coffee scales for 2026

You cannot repeat what you do not measure — the same rule that governs a water test kit governs a coffee scale. We compare scales on response time (a slow scale makes you overshoot), resolution and how well they survive a wet drip tray.

The models we recommend

  1. Smallest good scale

    TIMEMORE Black Mirror Nano

    2 kg × 0.1 g · pocket size · USB-C

The Black Mirror shrunk to fit a drip tray with room to spare, or a jacket pocket. Same 0.1 g resolution and fast refresh, without the flow-rate display.

Best for: Espresso on a machine with a shallow drip tray, or travel.

    8.2/10

    ≈ $50 / £40 / 45 €

  2. Best scale under 100

    TIMEMORE Black Mirror Basic 2

    2 kg × 0.1 g · flow rate · under-portafilter footprint

Fast enough for espresso, small enough for a drip tray, and it shows flow rate — which is the one number that tells you what your shot is doing while it is still happening.

Best for: Espresso, where 0.1 g and a fast refresh genuinely change what you can control.

    8.5/10

    ≈ $60 / £50 / 55 €

  3. Most water resistant

    Brewista Smart Scale II

    2 kg × 0.1 g · 6 modes · water resistant

The one scale here built to survive a drip tray. Six modes, auto-start timers and a silicone cover — which addresses the thing that actually kills coffee scales.

Best for: Espresso on a wet drip tray, which is where scales go to die.

    8.3/10

    ≈ $80 / £65

  4. Best for pour-over

    Hario V60 Drip Scale

    2 kg × 0.1 g · auto timer · V60 footprint

Built around the V60 rather than adapted to it: the footprint fits a dripper and a carafe, and the timer starts on its own when the first drops land.

Best for: Pour-over and immersion brewing, where a timer matters more than refresh speed.

    7.9/10

    ≈ $60 / £50 / 55 €

Which one for which need

Dosing espresso to a tenth

In espresso a tenth of a gram changes the puck's resistance. It is resolution, not capacity, that decides how useful the scale is.

Weighing a full carafe

On a large-capacity manual method the scale has to carry the weight of the water on top of the vessel.

Starting to weigh

Even a simple scale beats estimating by the spoonful. The most affordable model in the aisle already changes how consistent your coffee is.

Who each type suits

Espresso
Resolution to a tenth of a gram and a platform small enough to sit under the portafilter. The built-in timer is more useful than it looks: extraction time is the second indicator after weight.
Manual methods
Capacity matters more than fineness: you have to weigh the full carafe. A tenth of a gram adds nothing across 500 g of water.
General kitchen use
A coffee scale does a kitchen scale's job perfectly well; the reverse is rarely true because of resolution.

The trade-offs to weigh

Resolution against capacity
The two rarely rise together at a contained price. A very fine scale often caps out at two or three kilos, which is enough for coffee but not for cooking.
Built-in timer against simplicity
The timer saves a second device and sometimes complicates the interface. On a single-button scale you have to learn the long presses.
Sealing against price
A coffee scale lives under a dripping portafilter. Protected models last markedly longer, and that is paid for.

Questions buyers ask

Is a kitchen scale enough?

For manual methods, often yes. For espresso, no: resolution to the gram hides the gaps that separate two extractions.

Is the timer genuinely useful?

Yes, because weight and time are read together. An extraction that reaches the right weight too fast or too slowly immediately signals a grind problem.

What does the tare function do?

It resets the display to zero with the vessel in place, so you weigh only what you add. It is the most used function of all.

How do I protect the scale from moisture?

Cling film or a cover is enough under a portafilter. Moisture seeping in through the buttons is the number one cause of failure.

Do scales need calibrating?

Rarely in home use. If values drift, a calibration weight and the maker's procedure put things right — otherwise the batteries are often to blame.

What capacity for filter coffee?

Two kilos cover almost every case: a full carafe and its stand. Beyond that you pay for a capacity you will never use.

Can I brew directly on the scale?

Yes, but coffee spilled on the platform ends up in the electronics. An intermediate stand markedly extends its life.

What to remember

The scale is the accessory that improves coffee consistency most for the least money. Tenth-of-a-gram resolution for espresso, enough capacity for manual methods, and moisture protection that will decide how long it lasts.
