Nekemte

Large-beaned natural coffee from western Ethiopia. Wine-like and fruity, with a heavier body than the southern regions.

Nekemte — also traded as Wollega or Gimbi — comes from western Ethiopia and is distinctive before you taste it.

The beans

Noticeably larger than most Ethiopian coffee, which is otherwise known for small dense beans. That size affects roasting: larger beans need a slower profile so the centre develops.

The profile

Fruity and wine-like with a fuller body and lower acidity than Yirgacheffe or Guji. Blueberry and stone fruit in the naturals, citrus in the washed lots.

Processing

Predominantly natural, dried whole, which suits the drier western climate. Washing stations have expanded.

Why it is less known

Western Ethiopia has had less specialty investment than the south, and Wollega lots were long pooled into commodity channels.

Like Jimma, parts of Wollega grow semi-forest coffee with enormous genetic diversity within single lots.

Brewing it

Filter or immersion at light to medium roast. The heavier body forgives more than a Yirgacheffe.

What you need to make it

The equipment this actually requires — not a shopping list, the shortest route to doing it properly.

  • The reference pour-over Manual brewers

    Hario V60 02 Ceramic

    60° cone · spiral ribs · 1–4 cups

The most transparent cup you can brew for twenty euros, and the least forgiving. Ceramic holds heat where plastic does not — and the open bottom means your pour, not the dripper, decides the coffee.

Best for: Someone who wants to taste what a single-origin coffee is actually doing.

Best for: V60, Chemex, AeroPress and batch brewing, where clarity is the whole point.

  • Best pour control Kettles

    Fellow Stagg EKG Pro

    0.9 L · ±1 °C hold · counterbalanced gooseneck

The best-pouring kettle sold, and the hold function matters more than the thermometer. Expensive for boiling water — but if you brew pour-over daily, it is the accessory that most improves the cup.

Best for: Daily pour-over, where flow rate is the variable you are trying to control.
