Kirinyaga sits on the southern and eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, next to Nyeri, and it regularly produces the highest-scoring Kenyan lots.
The profile
Everything Kenyan coffee is known for, concentrated: blackcurrant, grapefruit, tomato, an intensely juicy acidity and a heavy syrupy body.
If Nyeri is the reference, Kirinyaga is often the more intense expression of the same character.
Why
The same red volcanic soil, unusually high in phosphoric acid, and altitudes from 1,500 to 1,900 metres on well-drained slopes.
Kirinyaga also has a dense network of well-run washing stations — factories, in Kenyan usage — many of which have invested heavily in careful processing.
Named factories
Kenyan lots are traded by factory, and the good ones have followings: Kiangoi, Karimikui, Kainamui, Gatomboya. Buying by factory name is how experienced buyers navigate Kenyan coffee.
The double fermentation
Kenyan washing uses a distinctive process with an intermediate soak in clean water, which is credited with much of the clarity Kenyan coffee shows.
Grades again
AA and AB are screen sizes, not quality. A superb AB from a good factory beats a mediocre AA every time.
Brewing it
Filter, light roast, hot water, fine grind. Dense beans need extraction.
