A northern Burundian province producing clean, juicy Red Bourbon at high altitude, at prices well below its quality.
Ngozi sits in northern Burundi beside Kayanza, and it shares the same conditions: high altitude, Red Bourbon, and centralised washing stations.
Juicy and clean: citrus, red fruit, floral top notes, with a syrupy body and bright acidity. Slightly softer than Kayanza and just as clean.
Burundian coffee comes from very small holdings — often a few hundred trees — delivered as cherry to central washing stations. Traceability is to the station, and the good ones are known by name.
A bacterial infection following antestia bug damage produces beans smelling of raw potato. It affects individual beans, so one can taint a brew. Careful sorting is essential and Burundian producers take it seriously.
Burundi is landlocked, less marketed than Kenya or Ethiopia, and consistently cheaper for comparable quality. It is among the best value in specialty coffee.
