Ywangan in southern Shan State is the centre of Myanmar’s emerging specialty coffee, developed from the 2010s partly as an alternative to opium poppy cultivation.
The profile
Sweet and delicate: floral, tea-like, with stone fruit and a clean, light body. It resembles a good Central American coffee more than its Southeast Asian neighbours.
Why it works
High altitude, suitable climate, and — crucially — a specialty programme built from the start with washing stations, raised beds and training, rather than converted from commodity production.
That sequencing is unusual and it shows in the consistency.
The difficulties
Political instability since 2021 has disrupted export and made buying complicated. Volumes are very small.
The producer organisations
Smallholder groups with shared washing infrastructure, several with direct relationships to European and American roasters.
Brewing it
Filter, light roast, a clean brewer.
