Chiroso was found in Urrao, Antioquia, and for years was described as “Caturra Chiroso” — an unusual elongated Caturra mutation.
The genetic surprise
Testing showed it is not Caturra at all. It is an Ethiopian landrace, related to the material behind Gesha and Wush Wush, that reached Colombia by an unknown route.
That reclassification transformed its reputation and its price.
The bean
Distinctly elongated — chiroso is local slang for long and thin — which is what marked it out as unusual in the first place.
The cup
Intensely floral and tropical: jasmine, bergamot, passion fruit, with a silky body. Recognisably in the Ethiopian-landrace family.
Where it grows
Urrao and surrounding Antioquia, in small quantities, with plantings spreading among quality-focused Colombian producers.
Brewing it
Filter, very light roast, a clean brewer.
