Bourbon Pointu and Laurina are the same variety under two names, and both appear on bags.
The names
Bourbon Pointu — “pointed Bourbon” — describes the bean shape and is the French and Réunionnais usage.
Laurina is the botanical designation, from Coffea arabica var. laurina.
Japanese buyers who funded the variety’s revival generally use Bourbon Pointu, which is why the name travelled.
What it is
A natural Bourbon mutation from Réunion with roughly half the caffeine of normal arabica — the only commercially grown arabica variety with that property naturally.
The cup
Delicate and sweet: citrus, honey, light body, clean finish.
Availability
Very small plantings on Réunion, plus Brazil, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Prices are high.
Brewing it
Filter, light roast, gentle extraction.
