An iced americano is espresso poured over cold water and ice. It is the simplest cold coffee that is genuinely good.
Why it beats iced filter
Filter coffee poured over ice is diluted twice — once by the brew ratio and again by melt. An americano starts from a concentrated shot, so it survives.
The method
Fill a tall glass with ice. Add 120 to 150 ml of cold water. Pull a double espresso and pour it over.
The crema sits on top and slowly sinks, which looks good and means nothing.
The ratio
Tighter than a hot americano. Around 1:3 or 1:4 espresso to water, because ice will add more.
Large ice
Fewer, larger cubes melt more slowly for the same chilling. It is the single biggest improvement to any iced coffee.
Which coffee
Bright, fruity, light roasts work beautifully cold — cold suppresses bitterness and lets acidity through. A dark chocolatey espresso can taste flat over ice.
The upgrade
A caffè shakerato: the same shot shaken hard with ice, strained, and served with no ice at all.
