Mogiana straddles the border of São Paulo and Minas Gerais and is one of Brazil’s oldest and most established coffee regions.
The profile
Sweet and nutty: peanut, milk chocolate, caramel, low acidity, medium to full body. Classic Brazilian character, executed carefully.
Terra roxa
The region’s red basaltic soil — terra roxa — is unusually fertile and well drained, and it is credited with much of the region’s consistency.
Yellow Bourbon
Mogiana has significant Yellow Bourbon plantings, ripening to yellow rather than red and generally regarded as Brazil’s sweetest variety.
The history
The Mogiana railway, built in the nineteenth century to move coffee to the port of Santos, gave the region its name and shaped its development.
Where it suits
Espresso, alone or as a blend base, where body and sweetness carry through milk.
Brewing it
Espresso at medium roast, or batch brew.
