An Indian cross carrying Liberica ancestry, widely planted across Asia. Balanced and full-bodied, and the backbone of Indonesian arabica.
S795 was bred in India, crossing Kent with S288 — itself a natural arabica–Liberica hybrid that carried rust resistance.
It is one of the most widely planted varieties in Asia.
India, where it originated. Indonesia, where it is a mainstay of Sumatran and Sulawesi arabica. Papua New Guinea, Vietnam and elsewhere across the region.
If you have drunk Indonesian arabica, you have probably drunk S795.
Balanced and full-bodied with nutty and chocolatey notes and a moderate acidity. It handles the wet-hulling and heavy processing common in Indonesia without falling apart, which is part of why it endured.
S288’s Liberica parentage brought disease tolerance, and it is far enough back in the lineage that the cup shows no obvious Liberica character.
That is the same trick the Timor hybrid performs for Catimor and Sarchimor: bring in resilience from another species and breed the flavour back.
Depends heavily on origin and processing. Wet-hulled Indonesian S795 wants an immersion brewer; washed Indian S795 works in a filter cone.
