Honduras’s widely planted rust-resistant variety, whose resistance broke in 2017. A lesson in how pathogens adapt.
Lempira is a Catimor-family variety released by IHCAFE and planted very widely across Honduras from the 1990s.
A new race of coffee leaf rust emerged that Lempira could not resist. Because it had been planted so widely and so uniformly, the outbreak spread fast and did severe damage.
That is the textbook risk of monoculture in a resistant variety: the pathogen only has to solve one lock.
Honduras has pushed diversification — Parainema, Obatã, IH90 and others — rather than replacing one dominant variety with another.
Clean and moderate, typical of the Catimor family. Fine at altitude, unremarkable below it.
Resistance is temporary. Every resistant variety deployed at scale is on a clock, which is why breeding programmes never finish.
Filter or espresso at medium roast.
