Bodum Chambord French Press 1 L vs AeroPress Original

Do you want body and no consumables, or clarity and a paper disc?

Both are immersion brewers, so both remove pour rate from the equation and both tolerate a mediocre grinder. What separates them is what the filter does — metal mesh lets oils through, paper does not.

Which one, for whom

Buy the Chambord French Press 1 L

Buy the French press if you brew for more than one person, prefer a heavy chocolatey cup, or never want to buy a consumable again. Grind coarse and decant immediately and it is one of the best-value brewers there is.

Buy the Original

Buy the AeroPress if you brew for one, want a clean cup, or need something that survives an office drawer and a suitcase. It cleans in ten seconds, which is why it gets used.

Questions people actually ask

Why is my French press gritty?

Grind size. A metal mesh cannot hold back fine particles, so every fine your grinder produces ends up in the cup. Blade grinders make a mountain of them. Grind coarse with a burr grinder and decant rather than leaving the coffee on the bed.

Can I use a metal filter in the AeroPress?

Yes, and it changes the brewer into something closer to a French press — more body, more oils, some sediment. It is a legitimate preference rather than an upgrade.

The full reviews

  • Best value brewer Manual brewers

Bodum Chambord French Press 1 L

    1 L · steel mesh · borosilicate glass

Full immersion, full body, and no paper to buy ever again. The cheapest genuinely good brewer here — and the one most ruined by grinding too fine.

Best for: Big-bodied dark and medium roasts, and anyone who does not want to buy papers.

    8.1/10

    ≈ $45 / £35 / 38 €

  • Most forgiving brewer Manual brewers

    AeroPress Original

    Immersion + pressure · 1–3 cups · unbreakable

The one brewer that makes a good cup while you are still learning. Immersion means time does the work instead of your pour — so a mediocre grinder and an ordinary kettle still produce something you want to drink.

Best for: Your first real brewer, an office drawer, or anywhere a V60 would be a nuisance.

    8.8/10
