Portafilter diameter determines which baskets, tampers and accessories fit.
The sizes
58 mm — the commercial standard. Used by nearly all prosumer and commercial machines, and by the Gaggia Classic.
54 mm — Sage/Breville’s standard across most of their range.
51 mm — common on entry-level Delonghi and similar machines.
53 mm, 49 mm and others exist on specific models.
Why 58 mm is preferable
Accessory availability. Baskets, tampers, distribution tools, puck screens, bottomless portafilters — everything is made for 58 mm first, and much of it only for 58 mm.
Precision baskets from IMS, VST and others are widely available in 58 mm and scarce in smaller sizes.
A wider bed for the same dose means a shallower puck, which some argue extracts more evenly.
Does the coffee taste different
Marginally, and it is not the reason to choose. A well-prepared 54 mm basket makes excellent espresso.
The practical argument is ecosystem, not physics.
Dose capacity
Smaller baskets hold less. A 51 mm basket typically takes 12 to 14 g against 18 to 20 g for a 58 mm double.
That constrains the drinks you can make, particularly larger milk drinks.
Checking yours
Measure the inside of the basket, not the portafilter body. Or look up your model.
If you have 54 or 51 mm
Fine. Buy what fits, expect fewer options, and do not assume a 58 mm accessory can be adapted.
