Most machines count brews or litres and prompt at a threshold. They do not detect scale.
The reset
The cycle must be completed and confirmed, and the machine then clears the counter itself.
If you descaled manually — filling the tank with solution and running it through — the machine has no idea, and the counter stays where it was.
What to do
Use the machine’s own descaling program where one exists. It paces the solution correctly and resets the counter at the end.
If you descaled manually, look up the reset sequence for your model. It is usually a button combination held for several seconds, and it is in the manual.
If the cycle was interrupted
Power loss, or an empty tank mid-cycle, will leave the machine believing the cycle never finished. Run it again from the start.
If it prompts far too often
Check the hardness setting. Most machines have one, and if it is set to “very hard” by default, the counter runs down fast.
Set it to match your actual supply, or to the setting appropriate for filtered water.
If it prompts immediately after resetting
A faulty flow meter or sensor. Service.
The important part
Do not ignore it and do not keep resetting it without descaling. Scale damage is cumulative and often terminal.
If the prompt seems too frequent, fix the hardness setting — do not disable the warning.
