A dosing funnel is a metal ring that sits on top of the portafilter basket, extending its walls upward.
What it does
Catches grounds that would otherwise land on the rim or the counter.
Gives room for WDT, so you can stir vigorously without spilling.
Keeps the basket rim clean, which matters — grounds on the rim break the group gasket seal and cause leaking.
What it does not do
Improve extraction. It is a convenience item, not a brewing tool.
Some are marketed as distribution aids. They are not — coffee falling into a funnel is no better distributed than coffee falling into a basket.
Types
Magnetic — the common design, snapping onto the basket rim. Convenient, and check it fits your basket size.
Threaded or clip-on — more secure, more fiddly.
Some grinders come with one sized for their chute.
Is it worth it
If you use WDT, yes. Stirring 18 g of grounds in a basket without a funnel means grounds on the counter.
If you grind into a dosing cup and tip it in, less so — the cup does much of the same job.
If you grind straight into the portafilter and do not stir, it is purely tidiness.
The alternative
A dosing cup — grind into it, stir with WDT in the cup, then invert onto the basket. Achieves the same and suits single dosing better.
Cheap either way. Buy the WDT tool first.
