Flow control replaces or supplements the fixed water path with an adjustable valve, usually a paddle, letting you throttle flow during extraction.
Flow versus pressure
They are linked through the puck. Restricting flow into a fixed bed lowers the pressure that develops, and vice versa.
Flow control is therefore a form of pressure profiling, approached from the other side.
What people do with it
Slow start — a gentle flow at the beginning acts as pre-infusion, letting the puck saturate and settle before full pressure.
Declining finish — reducing flow as the shot progresses avoids the harsh extraction of the last seconds.
Very low flow throughout — long, gentle extractions of 45 seconds or more, which suit some light roasts.
Where it genuinely helps
Light roasts, which are hard to extract and channel easily.
Coffees that taste harsh at 9 bar flat.
Diagnosing — you can feel the puck resisting.
Where it does not
Milk drinks. And any setup where the grinder is the limiting factor, which is most of them.
The kits
Retrofit paddles exist for E61 groups and are a common upgrade. They are mechanically simple and reversible.
The honest position
This is an enthusiast tool. It rewards someone already weighing, using WDT, with a good grinder and good water, who has run out of other variables.
If any of those is missing, fix it first.
