Does portafilter size matter — 58, 54 or 51 mm?

The diameter of the filter basket does not, in itself, make better or worse coffee. A well-extracted shot from a 51 mm basket beats a badly extracted one from 58 mm every time.

What it decides is the ecosystem.

58 mm — the commercial standard

Used by virtually every commercial machine and most prosumer ones: Gaggia, Lelit, Rancilio, ECM, Profitec, La Marzocco. Because it is the professional standard, thirty years of accessories fit it — precision baskets from IMS and VST, bottomless portafilters, calibrated tampers, distribution tools, puck screens, WDT tools sized to it.

If you expect to tinker, this is the one to have.

54 mm — Sage and Breville

A proprietary size with a real but much smaller aftermarket. Sage sells its own accessories and a handful of third parties make more. You are not stuck, and you are shopping in a smaller catalogue at less competitive prices.

51 mm — De’Longhi and others

The thinnest ecosystem of the three. Non-pressurised baskets and a few tampers exist; the range beyond that is limited.

The practical implication

A larger basket also means a wider, shallower coffee bed for the same dose, which some argue extracts marginally more evenly. That effect is small and disputed, and it is not why 58 mm matters.

Buy on the ecosystem. If you think you will want a bottomless portafilter to diagnose channelling, a precision basket, or a better tamper — and most people who stick with espresso do — 58 mm makes all of that trivial and the others make it a search.
